PHIL & JANE then LILY RAMONA
Saturday 17th February 2018. 10am – 12 noon. Venue opens at 9.30am
Traditional and contemporary folk duo Phil and Jane followed by singer/songwriter Lily Ramona playing originals.
Phil and Jane love close harmonies and also love to hear the audience joining in with some of their chorus songs.
As well as tunes you may already know Phil and Jane also perform some self penned songs, mainly written about the beautiful scenery around Sussex and Hampshire. Over the last few years the duo have performed at various folk clubs, festivals and other events.
Lily Ramona’s dad Andy Allan played with the Sex Pistols, and her mum was in the original female punk band The Slits. Lily joined her dad in London Pubs singing Suzanne Vega’s classic ‘Lukas’ from 8 years old. Lily sang with Andy’s flatmate named ‘Piano’ at home and their iconic joined vocals were forged. Andy soon followed with his acoustic guitar and the band The Hank Dogs were formed with Lily on harmonies & drums, and a little accordion. After recording a demo tape, they were introduced to Nick Drake’s legendary producer, Joe Boyd. Joe immediately said the Hank Dogs were the first British act he’d loved in 30 years and he helped them to record their debut ‘Bareback’ in 1998. Nick Hasted called the band ‘Buried Treasure’ in his article for the Independent.
The Hank Dogs enjoyed great success for 15 years, especially overseas and at their show at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Joan Baez asked them to support her US tour where they played to packed auditoriums all round America.
They performed at the Barbican alongside David Gray, The Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury Festival, South by Southwest, and supported Ricky Ross (Deacon Blue) and Eliza Carthy on UK tours went on to release a second Album entitled ‘Half Smile’.
After a long break from the Hank Dogs, Lily’s passion for music drove her back to what she loves – singing, performing and writing. Lily Ramona has a unique Indie Folk/Acoustic sound with beautiful vocals and writes all her own songs. Just last week Lily was likened to a ‘female Nick Drake’ as well as Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell.
This really is the start of something special and her popularity is gaining momentum with the release of her first EP titled ‘Into the Mirror’ recorded with Trevor Moss at the Anglophone Recording Company. The EP is available on Bandcamp.
With regret, the venue is below ground on split levels and has no wheelchair access.
A Hearing loop is available.
