A story of love and survival during the First World War, the classic 1931 film ‘Dishonored’ will be coming to the Eastbourne Under Ground Theatre on 17th March. Starring Marlene Dietrich, ‘arguably one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the silver screen’, Victor McLaglen, Gustav von Seyffertitz and Warner Oland.
1931′s ‘Dishonoured’ with Marlene Dietrich
Marlene Dietrich, a widow of an Austrian army captain is inducted into the Austrian Secret Service as a spy called Agent X-27. She uses her feminine wiles to seduce Russian officers and steal their secrets to great effect. That is, until she meets Russian Agent H-14 (McLaglen). When she falls in love with him, her missions are forgotten and her resolve is weakened. She then has to decide who she loves more, her enemy lover or her country.
Dietrich takes on a variety of disguises in the film but is regarded as a ‘trailblazer’ for her seductive black leather outfit. Throughout the film Dietrich projects an image that is both ‘alluring and scathing’.
The film was directed and edited by Josef von Sternberg who also co-wrote it with Daniel N. Rubin. Sternberg was considered one of the premiere directors of the 1930’s and a ‘master cinematographer’. `Dishonored’ is described as ‘a very stylish entry in the Sternberg canon’ and throughout the film he uses his trademark ` light and shadows to paint visual poetry’.
