A double-bill of music this afternoon: a local guitar duo and a cello and kora talent who’s on a whistlestop World Tour of 21 concerts in 21 cities… and we’ve tempted him to Eastbourne!
We present Ashworth & Rattenbury and Tunde Jegede.
Ashworth & Rattenbury Guitars began playing as a duo to prepare music for a celebration of composer Milton Babbitt’s centenary in 2016. Their performance was recorded for later broadcast by BBC Radio 3’s ‘Hear & Now’ show, and Brian and Jon also performed Babbitt’s music at further concerts. Inspired to explore the guitar duet repertoire further, Brian and Jon now perform a wide range of music for two guitars. This includes arrangements of Baroque keyboard music, well-known Classical guitar duets, choros from Latin America, and works by the American minimalists. Both guitarists are also members of the Sussex Guitar Quartet, which is currently rehearsing for concerts later this year.
After the break Tunde Jegede will take to the stage. Tunde is a 21st Century Renaissance Man Who Bridges African & European Musical Traditions.
He is an internationally renowned kora player, cellist and composer, whose soul-stirring music blends the ebb and flow of traditional kora-playing with his own dynamic contemporary compositions.
In this unique solo concert listeners are taken on a journey to the heart of Malian griot culture bringing Tunde’s sound worlds and rich musical legacies to life.
With re-imagined cinematic imagery of ancient Africa, it is a meditative musical experience that touches on the very essence of our being. Tunde Jegede’s music is at once an intimate and personal reflection – a cultural expression that transcends boundaries.
This may well be a ‘once in a lifetime’ event here in the town. Catch it if you can.
